Wander the red-brick lanes of Potsdam's Dutch Quarter
Holländisches Viertel, Mittelstrasse
About 150 brick houses built for Dutch craftsmen in the 18th century, now full of small shops, cafes and bars.
What it is
To build up his garrison town, the Soldier King Frederick William I needed skilled craftsmen and found them in Holland. To make them feel at home, he had this quarter of about 150 brick houses built in the middle of the 18th century: unplastered, with white joints, shutters and sometimes curved gables. Today small shops, cafes and bars fill the ground floors.
How to do it
The quarter is open at all hours and a few minutes' walk from the Nauen Gate. The Jan Bouman House at Mittelstrasse 8, a museum of the quarter's history, opens Monday to Friday from 13:00 to 18:00 and from 11:00 at weekends and on holidays; adults pay €3 and children up to 16 go free. A private two-hour guided walk can combine the quarter with Sanssouci.
Good to know
The quarter holds a tulip festival in spring and a Sinterklaas market in Advent. The Jan Bouman House closes on 24, 25 and 31 December.
