Saxony lies in eastern Germany on the Elbe. Dresden, its capital, holds the Baroque legacy of August the Strong, and upstream lie the sandstone rocks of Saxon Switzerland, where the Bastei Bridge and Königstein Fortress stand above the river.
This hub links Dresden, which has its own page, and the Bastei Bridge entry from the Germany page, and adds Königstein Fortress.
Walk the walls of Königstein Fortress above the Elbe
Festung Königstein, above the Elbe
Half a dayNo booking needed
A fortress high above the Elbe, with a well 152.5 metres deep, a state prison and a link to Saxon porcelain.
What it is
The name Königstein first appears in full in 1241, and in 1589 Elector Christian I ordered the castle on the rock to be built up into Saxony's state fortress. Its essential water supply came from a well dug under the Freiberg mining master Martin Planer: at 152.5 metres, the second deepest historic well in Germany. The fortress was also Saxony's state prison, with more than a thousand names on its list of prisoners, among them Johann Friedrich Böttger, later co-inventor of European porcelain, held here on the orders of August the Strong.
How to do it
From November to March it opens from 9:00 to 17:00, last entry one hour before closing. Off-season tickets from 2 November 2026 cost €15, or €11 reduced; children up to 6 go free.
Good to know
Its giant wine barrel, 238,600 litres, stood in the Magdalenenburg cellar until 1819.
About 2 hours on foot from Stadt Wehlen to RathenFree
A sandstone bridge from 1851 spans the Bastei rocks 194 m above the Elbe, reached on foot through the forest from the S-Bahn.
What it is
The Bastei rocks stand 194 m above the Elbe, and the sandstone bridge between them dates from 1851, when it replaced a wooden one. Access is free at all hours. The rock castle of Neurathen, which the bridge leads to, has been closed for a long time for safety reasons, so do not plan around it.
How to do it
Skip the car park and come by S-Bahn from Dresden: get off the S1 at Stadt Wehlen, cross the river by ferry, and follow the marked route up through the forest to the bridge and down into Kurort Rathen, about 5.8 km and two hours, where a cable ferry takes you back across the Elbe to the station on the same line.
Good to know
The descent to Rathen is steep and stepped. This is the most visited lookout in Saxon Switzerland, so go early.

Which places for what
Dresden for the Zwinger, the Green Vault, the Semperoper and the Striezelmarkt. Saxon Switzerland for the Bastei Bridge and Königstein Fortress, high above the Elbe.
Combining them
In must30's view, base yourself in Dresden for three nights and give Saxon Switzerland a full day: the Bastei in the morning and Königstein in the afternoon, or the other way round.
When to go
Late spring to autumn suits the rocks and the walks. In Advent the Striezelmarkt fills Dresden's Altmarkt, from 25 November to 24 December 2026, and Königstein keeps winter hours from November to March.
Questions travellers ask
Is Königstein Fortress open in winter?
Yes. From November to March it opens from 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry an hour before closing.
Can I see the Bastei and Königstein on a day trip from Dresden?
In must30's view, yes, with an early start: both stand above the Elbe in Saxon Switzerland, upstream from Dresden.
Why is Königstein linked to porcelain?
Johann Friedrich Böttger, later co-inventor of European porcelain, was held at the fortress on the orders of August the Strong.
