Climb the main tower of Osaka Castle and walk its moats
Osaka Castle, Chuo, Osaka
Toyotomi Hideyoshi's castle, rebuilt in 1931 as an eight-floor museum, inside a park of moats, giant stone walls and cherry trees.
What it is
Hideyoshi began the castle in 1583; the main tower you see is the 1931 rebuild, 55 m high, with a museum of his life and the sieges of 1614 and 1615 on eight floors and a view from the top. The moats, gates and stone walls around it are free to walk, and the park has about 3,000 cherry trees.
How to do it
The tower opens 9:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:30, and closes from 28 December to 1 January. Adults pay ¥1,200, students ¥600, and junior high pupils and younger go free; the ticket also covers the Toyotomi Stone Wall Museum, opened in April 2025. Every station is 15 to 20 minutes away on foot; Tanimachi 4-chome is the flattest route.
Good to know
Spend as long on the walls as in the tower: the size of the stones at the Sakuramon gate is the point. The upper floors are narrow and fill fast at midday.
