Things to do in Puerto Vallarta: 9 experiences

Updated Leer en español

Puerto Vallarta is a resort city on the Pacific coast of Jalisco, spreading north from its old town, the Zona Romántica, along Banderas Bay, one of the largest and deepest bays in the world. A small town until the 1960s, it grew after The Night of the Iguana was filmed nearby, and its old town keeps a surprising amount of character for a beach resort.

The Mexico page covers the Malecón at sunset, linked below. This page adds the bay itself: humpback whales in winter, snorkelling at Los Arcos, the protected Islas Marietas and the boat to Yelapa, plus the botanical garden in the hills, the Zona Romántica at night, Isla Cuale and the taco stands.

  • Getting there

The airport is about 8 km north of the Zona Romántica. City buses marked Centro stop across the road from the terminal and take 20 to 30 minutes to the old town; in January 2026 the fare was 22 pesos.

  • Getting around

Buses run every few minutes along the coast road. White and orange buses go south from the Zona Romántica to Mismaloya, Boca de Tomatlán and the botanical garden, and water taxis go on to the villages without roads.

  • How many days

In must30's view, four days: one for the town, one on the water at Los Arcos or the Marietas, one for Yelapa and one for the botanical garden or a whale trip in season.

The rainy season runs from mid June to mid October, with August the wettest month. December to May is the best beach season, and December to March is whale season.
