South Holland: Rotterdam, The Hague, Delft and tulips

Updated Leer en español

South Holland is the most crowded corner of the Netherlands and one of the easiest to travel: Rotterdam, The Hague, Delft, Leiden and Gouda sit a short train ride apart, with the bulb fields and the windmills of Kinderdijk in between.

Rotterdam, The Hague and Delft each have their own page. This page adds the bulb fields around Lisse, with the free Keukenhof Castle estate, the Black Tulip Museum and the April flower parade, plus two day trips: the cheese market in Gouda and the antiquities museum in Leiden.

The Netherlands page covers Keukenhof itself, the windmills of Kinderdijk and Leiden's Hortus botanicus.

Questions travellers ask

What is the difference between Holland and South Holland?

South Holland is one of the twelve Dutch provinces, with The Hague as its capital. North and South Holland together are the historic Holland, the name often used for the whole country.

Can you visit Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague in one day?

Yes, the trains are short, but it is rushed. In must30's view, give Rotterdam and The Hague a day each and fit Delft in as a half day.

When is the Gouda cheese market?

On Thursday mornings from April to August. In 2026 it ran from 2 April to 27 August, from 10:00 to 12:30.

When are the tulip fields in bloom?

Usually through April, peaking around mid-April, with daffodils and hyacinths earlier. The fields are private farmland, so admire them from the roads and paths.
