The coast of Lagoa, between the Arade estuary at Ferragudo and the chapel of Senhora da Rocha, is the stretch of the Algarve where the limestone cliffs are most worn into arches, sea stacks, caves and small coves. Benagil, with its famous sea cave, sits in the middle; the fishing village of Carvoeiro is the main base.
The Portugal page covers the Benagil cave itself and the rules for visiting it by boat or kayak. This page covers the rest of the coast and its hinterland: the cliff-top trails, the rock maze of Algar Seco, the beaches and their underwater trails, the village of Ferragudo, the Moorish castle of Silves, the springs of Sítio das Fontes and the local wine estates.
Most of it is within 20 minutes' drive of Carvoeiro, and much of the coast can be walked.
Hike the Seven Hanging Valleys trail along the cliffs
Praia de Vale Centeanes to Praia da Marinha
3 to 4 hours there and backFree
Walk a cliff-top path past coves, sea arches and the skylight of the Benagil cave.
What it is
The Seven Hanging Valleys trail is what Lagoa council describes as 5.7 km of coast between Praia de Vale Centeanes and Praia da Marinha, and says was named the best hiking route in Europe. It follows an almost unbroken line of limestone cliffs, cut only by streams that mostly end above sea level: the hanging valleys of its name.
How to do it
It is linear, so most people walk out and back, or take a taxi from the far end; allow three to four hours with stops.
Good to know
There is little shade and no water between the beaches, and the path runs close to unfenced edges that can collapse. In July 2026 local guides warned about litter and wear on the path, so take everything back with you.
Climb down into a maze of ochre limestone carved by rain and sea into arches, pools and holes.
What it is
Algar Seco is just east of Carvoeiro; Lagoa council traces the name to the Arabic al-gár, the cave. A wooden boardwalk of about 600 metres, with rest areas, leads there along the cliff from the Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, a fort built between 1670 and 1675 above Carvoeiro beach, of which a wall, the gateway and its chapel remain.
How to do it
At Algar Seco, stairs drop down into the rocks; keep right for A Boneca, a small cave whose openings frame the sea and the most photographed spot in Carvoeiro. Sunset, when the stone turns deep orange, is the best time.
Good to know
On rough days spray reaches the lower ledges, so stay on the upper paths, and wear shoes with grip.
Snorkel underwater nature trails off the cove of rock arches and sea stacks seen on Algarve postcards.
What it is
Praia da Marinha is at the eastern end of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, and Lagoa council notes its Gold Flag award and its place among the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world. The University of the Algarve, the regional authorities and the council set up the trails. Further out lies the Pedra do Valado reef, the heart of the Algarve Reef marine natural park, created in January 2024 over about 156 km² off Lagoa, Albufeira and Silves, with close to 900 species recorded.
How to do it
Bring a mask and fins and snorkel among the rocks off the beach. Dive boats reach the reef.
Good to know
Snorkel only on calm days, and keep away from the foot of the cliffs, which can collapse.
See the chapel of Senhora da Rocha on its sea spur
Porches
45 minutesFree
See the white chapel on a narrow rock spur between two beaches, spared when the 1755 earthquake destroyed the fort there.
What it is
The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha, at Porches just west of Armação de Pêra, is one of the best-known images of the Algarve. The headland was a place of worship for Visigoths and Muslims before the fort was built on it against pirates, with a polygonal wall, a moat and a drawbridge. The chapel is from the 16th century.
How to do it
Its porch opens through three arches on columns with Visigothic capitals, and the body is crowned by an eight-sided dome of Byzantine inspiration; inside, when the door is open, are a gilded and painted altarpiece and a wooden statue of the Virgin and Child. It is free. Come in the late afternoon, when the light warms the whitewash.
Explore Ferragudo and walk the Caminho dos Promontórios
Ferragudo
Half a day with the pathFree
Climb through a fishing village of white houses, then walk 6 km of cliffs past a lighthouse looking over Portimão.
What it is
Ferragudo, on the east bank of the Arade estuary facing Portimão, climbs the hill from the river to the parish church at the top; it has recently marked 500 years since its formal creation. On a rock between Praia Grande and the old Angrinha bay stands the Forte de São João do Arade, built under King João II in the 15th century to watch the river mouth, decommissioned in 1896, sold at auction and later turned into a home.
How to do it
From the river mouth, the Caminho dos Promontórios runs along the cliffs from Praia do Molhe to Praia do Paraíso near Carvoeiro, with interpretive panels on geology and marine life, past the Ponta do Altar lighthouse of 1893. Walk it one way and take a taxi back.
Walk the red sandstone ramparts of one of the best-preserved Islamic-era fortifications in Portugal, above a former capital of the Islamic Algarve.
What it is
Inland from Lagoa, the castle of Silves crowns the hill above the town. The walls and towers, of local sandstone and rammed earth, come mainly from Almoravid and Almohad works of the 12th and 13th centuries, and it has been a national monument since 1910. In 1189 King Sancho I took the town with the help of crusaders.
How to do it
Inside, the ramparts run above excavated palace foundations, and below the courtyard lies the great cistern known as the Cisterna da Moura, about 10 metres high, with five naves of columns and arches. Silves has a station on the Algarve line, a little outside the town, so it also works without a car.
Good to know
Entry is paid and hours are longer in summer; check the council's site for current times and prices.
Swim in the springs of Sítio das Fontes on the Arade
Estômbar
Half a dayFree
Cool off away from the sea in natural spring-fed pools shaded by trees, where Lagoa families go.
What it is
Sítio das Fontes is a municipal park on the banks of the Arade at Estômbar, with walking paths, picnic areas and old buildings by the river. After several years of drought the springs ran again in 2026, thanks to a wet winter, and the council invited visitors back for a swim in the pools. It makes a calm half day away from the crowded beaches, it suits children, and it is free.
How to do it
Bring a picnic and water shoes. The park is a short drive inland from Carvoeiro and Ferragudo, and boat trips up the Arade from Portimão pass it on their way towards Silves.
Good to know
Check before you go that the pools are full, since the flow depends on each winter's rain. Weekends in July and August are the busiest.
Taste wine from some of the oldest vines in the Algarve, or among large sculptures on an estate that mixes wine with art.
What it is
Lagoa is one of the Algarve's wine towns, and its tourism portal lists eight estates and cellars around it. Two show the range. Morgado do Quintão, between Silves and Lagoa, is a family estate founded in 1810 by the Count of Silves; it makes low-intervention wines from local grapes such as Crato Branco and Negra Mole, including the old light red styles called palhete and clarete. Quinta dos Vales is a 44-hectare estate at Estômbar. Others on the list include Quinta dos Santos, Quinta da Penina, Dona Niza and the Algarve cooperative cellar.
How to do it
Each estate runs its own visits and tastings, usually by booking, so arrange them ahead.
Good to know
Choose a driver, or join a wine tour from Carvoeiro or Portimão.
A round hole in the cave roof lights a small sandy beach inside, seen today from a licensed boat or a guided kayak.
What it is
Benagil is a sea cave east of Praia de Benagil, near Carvoeiro. The rules changed in August 2024, and they decide how you see it: landing on the cave beach and swimming in are banned, kayaks and paddleboards may enter only with a certified guide (one guide for every six kayaks), and boats are limited in number and in time inside.
How to do it
In practice that means a licensed boat trip from Benagil beach, Carvoeiro, Portimão or Albufeira, or a guided kayak tour. For the view from above, walk the clifftop Seven Hanging Valleys trail from Praia da Marinha, which passes right by the skylight.
Good to know
Go early on a calm morning; swell can cancel entries.
Faro airport is about an hour away by car. The nearest stations on the Algarve railway line are Estômbar-Lagoa, Portimão and Silves, with buses or taxis on to Carvoeiro and Benagil. Lagos is about 40 minutes west by car.
Getting around
A car is the simplest way to link the beaches, Silves and the wine estates, but parking at Benagil and Marinha fills early in summer. The coast itself can be walked: the Seven Hanging Valleys trail links Vale Centeanes to Marinha, and the Caminho dos Promontórios runs from Ferragudo towards Carvoeiro. Taxis fill the gaps for one-way walks.
When to go
Spring and autumn are best for the cliff trails, which have little shade. June to September is the time for swimming and snorkelling, with the busiest beaches in July and August. Boat and kayak entries into the caves depend on the swell, so keep a spare morning.
Where to stay
Carvoeiro is the liveliest base, with restaurants and the boardwalk to Algar Seco. Ferragudo is quieter and close to Portimão's station. Armação de Pêra, east of Senhora da Rocha, has a long town beach. Villas and apartments spread along the cliff tops in between.
Questions travellers ask
Can you walk to the Benagil cave?
Not into it. Since August 2024 landing on the cave beach and swimming in are banned, and the cave is seen by licensed boat or guided kayak, as the Portugal page explains. On foot you can look down through its skylight from the Seven Hanging Valleys trail.
How hard is the Seven Hanging Valleys trail?
Moderate. The path is 5.7 km one way with short climbs in and out of each valley, little shade and unfenced cliff edges. Most walkers go out and back, so allow at least three hours, carry water and start early in summer.
Where should you stay to visit Benagil?
Carvoeiro is the usual base: Benagil is a short drive away, and boat trips to the cave leave from its beach as well as from Benagil itself. Ferragudo and Armação de Pêra are quieter alternatives.
Can you do this coast without a car?
Partly. Buses and taxis reach Carvoeiro, and from there you can walk to Algar Seco and take boats along the coast. For Silves, the wine estates and one-way trail walks, a car, a taxi or a tour makes things much easier.
