See Ramiro I's 9th-century palace on Monte Naranco
Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, Monte Naranco, Oviedo
A two-storey stone hall with open loggias, built for King Ramiro I on the slope of Monte Naranco above Oviedo.
What it is
Two buildings stand here, put up for Ramiro I, who reigned from 842 to 850. Santa María del Naranco was most probably a royal hall rather than a church; it was rededicated to Santa María by the 12th century. San Miguel de Lillo, about 240 m up the hill, is the surviving part of the church of the same complex. Both belong to the Monuments of Oviedo and the Kingdom of Asturias, listed by UNESCO in December 1985.
How to do it
Guided visits cost about €4 to €5, and on Mondays entry is free without a guide. Tickets for San Miguel de Lillo are sold at Santa María's visitor point.
