On your own or with a tour
Cofete is on the wild windward side of the Jandía peninsula, inside the Parque Natural de Jandía, and no paved road reaches it. From the FV-2 at Morro Jable a dirt track runs a little over eleven kilometres to a fork, on the Cabildo de Fuerteventura's figures: one branch climbs over the mountains to Cofete and Villa Winter, about nine kilometres more, and the other runs about nine kilometres to El Puertito de la Cruz and the Punta de Jandía lighthouse. The tourism board calls the Cofete stretch dirt and rock with difficult sections and recommends a 4x4; the Pájara council says the lighthouse branch takes about an hour from Morro Jable at a moderate speed. The Cabildo began drafting a project to improve the tracks in 2023; we found no sign of works by October 2026.
The car is the catch. AutoReisen, a Canary hire firm with a desk at Fuerteventura airport, lists off-road driving and damage to tyres and wheels among what its insurance does not cover. Whether the Cofete track counts as off-road is the hire company's call, so ask at the desk and get the answer in writing. If it is excluded, a puncture out there is yours to pay.
Without a car, Tiadhe's line 111 runs from Morro Jable to Cofete and Punta de Jandía with only a couple of departures a day. Check the times on tiadhe.com the day before and plan your return around the last bus. Walkers can take the Gran Valle trail over the mountain to the cemetery on Cofete beach: about 6.5 kilometres and two and a half hours, on the tourism board's figures.
At the end of the peninsula, next to the lighthouse, El Puertito de la Cruz is a fishing hamlet with a few restaurants known for fish broth. Cofete has a hamlet with a restaurant, a small cemetery by the sand and Villa Winter on the slope, built for the German engineer Gustav Winter after the Second World War.
Which tour to book
Choose by where you are staying and how much of the day you want to give it. With any of the three, the driving and the insurance are the operator's problem, not yours.
- Cofete and lighthouse jeep safari from the south: our first pick. About five hours with pickup in Costa Calma, Esquinzo, Jandía or Morro Jable, and the full route: the Cofete viewpoint and beach, El Puertito and the lighthouse. The short transfer from the southern hotels leaves more of the time for the stops.
- Longer Cofete and Jandía safari with pickup: five to seven hours depending on the day's pickups. It covers the Cofete side of the peninsula at a slower pace; its listing does not make clear whether it reaches the lighthouse, so check the itinerary and that your hotel or area is on its pickup list before you pay.
- Short Cofete and Villa Winter trip, small group: about four hours with pickup, centred on the beach and the villa. If the lighthouse matters to you, take the first one.
If you are booking the night before, the southern safari is the one with the shortest transfer from Morro Jable or Costa Calma.

Before you book
- Bring a windproof layer, sun cream, a hat and water. The hamlet at Cofete has a single restaurant.
- The ride is bumpy for long stretches. Tell the operator about back problems, pregnancy or carsickness before you book.
- Pickup times depend on your hotel; the operator confirms yours after you book.
- Do not plan a swim at Cofete: the tourism board flags strong waves and bathing with caution.
- Travelling with children: check the minimum age and whether child seats are provided.
- Weather can change the route or cancel the trip. Check what refund or new date the tour offers.
