For most visitors New York State means New York City, and the city has its own page with the experiences worth booking. The rest of the state is far bigger than people expect: Niagara Falls sits on the Canadian border, about 400 miles from Manhattan, and the Finger Lakes lie halfway between them.
This page adds three trips beyond the city. Two are easy from Manhattan: Dia Beacon, a museum of large modern works in an old factory by the Hudson, reached by train, and Storm King, a sculpture park in the hills across the river. The third, the gorge of Watkins Glen in the Finger Lakes, fits a road trip to Niagara.
Serra's walk-in steel ellipses and rooms of Flavin's fluorescent lights, reached by a train ride along the river.
What it is
Dia Beacon fills a former Nabisco box-printing factory on the riverbank with art too large for most museums, including Richard Serra's walk-in steel ellipses, Andy Warhol's Shadows and long rooms of Dan Flavin's fluorescent lights.
How to do it
The trip there is half the pleasure: Metro-North's Hudson Line leaves Grand Central and follows the river for 80 to 90 minutes to Beacon, and the museum is about five minutes' walk from the station. Sit on the left side of the train going north for the water. Main Street in Beacon, uphill from the station, has lunch spots and galleries for the rest of the day.
Good to know
Check the days and hours first: they change with the season, and the museum has long been closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
About 500 acres of fields, woods and hills with outdoor works by Calder, Noguchi and Goldsworthy, and seven rows of grassy waves.
What it is
Storm King Art Center spreads about 500 acres of fields, woods and hills in Mountainville, about an hour's drive north of Manhattan, with large outdoor works by Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Andy Goldsworthy and Mark di Suvero, and Maya Lin's Storm King Wavefield, seven long rows of grassy waves.
How to do it
The park is seasonal and opens Wednesday to Sunday; in 2026 the season ends on 30 November, and from 31 October it closes at 4 pm. Book a dated ticket ahead: pre-booked tickets secure both entry and parking, and on-site sales can run out for some slots. Without a car, a Hudson Valley tour is the simplest way in.
Good to know
It is a walking day, so wear proper shoes. Weekend prices are higher during the autumn peak, from late September to early November, when the foliage draws the biggest crowds.
Climb the Gorge Trail past 19 waterfalls at Watkins Glen
Watkins Glen State Park, Finger Lakes
2 to 3 hoursNo booking needed
Stone bridges and more than 800 steps lead over, under and along the water through a gorge up to 400 feet deep.
What it is
At the southern tip of Seneca Lake, in the Finger Lakes, Glen Creek drops through a narrow gorge up to 400 feet deep, and the Gorge Trail climbs right through it: 19 waterfalls in about two miles, over, under and along the water on stone bridges and more than 800 stone steps, past Rainbow Falls.
How to do it
The trail is seasonal: it opens in late May and closes from around mid-October because of ice, while the rim trails above stay open. Go early in summer, when the narrow path is busiest by midday, and combine it with the wineries along Seneca Lake.
Good to know
The steps are wet and can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip.
Get into the spray at Niagara Falls from the US side
Niagara Falls, New York
Half a dayBook ahead
From the New York side you stand right beside the American Falls, then a boat and wooden walkways take you into the spray.
What it is
On the New York side, Niagara Falls State Park puts you right beside the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, with Horseshoe Falls in view across the border. Two attractions take you into the spray. The Maid of the Mist boat sails to the foot of the falls from the dock below Prospect Point. Cave of the Winds, on Goat Island, takes you down to wooden walkways and the Hurricane Deck at the base of Bridal Veil Falls.
How to do it
The Maid of the Mist 2026 season runs from 24 April to 8 November, and the 2027 opening date is not yet set. Cave of the Winds is open all year with timed entry; tickets are sold only in person at the attraction or at the park's Welcome Center, not online.
Good to know
Cave of the Winds no longer hands out its famous sandals, so wear shoes you do not mind soaking.
Give New York City the bulk of the trip. From there, the Hudson Valley is the easy add-on: Beacon is about 90 minutes by train from Grand Central, and Storm King about an hour's drive north of Manhattan. Niagara Falls is a separate trip of at least a night, and only worth it if you have two or three spare days or are continuing to Toronto.
How to combine them
Do the Hudson Valley as a day trip by Metro-North, or with a car for a night if you want Dia Beacon and Storm King together. For Niagara, the quickest route is a flight to Buffalo; Amtrak also runs from Penn Station to Niagara Falls, a long day on the train. A road trip west through the Finger Lakes, with a stop at Watkins Glen, turns that journey into part of the holiday.
When to go
Late spring to October is the season outside the city. The Watkins Glen Gorge Trail opens in mid to late May and closes in late October, Storm King closes for the winter at the end of November, and the Maid of the Mist boat at Niagara runs from late April to early November. October brings the foliage to the Hudson Valley and the Finger Lakes, and the weekend crowds with it.
