Start with the official ticket page

The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, on Tokyo's western side, is not on Japan's list yet, but it has to be planned like one of its big sights. The rule on its own site is short: "All admission to the Ghibli Museum is by advance reservation only. No reservation or ticket purchase can be made at the Museum." The museum's ticket page, ghibli-museum.jp, names two ways to buy from abroad: Lawson Ticket's online store, and a Sunrise Tours bus tour run by JTB that includes the museum.

This is a planning guide, not a report of a recent visit. The rules and prices below come from ghibli-museum.jp, checked on 25 October 2026. Lawson Ticket's servers refused must30's automated connection that day, so this guide does not say which dates are sold out.

Why it sells out

Tickets come out in one batch a month. The museum says tickets "become available for purchase at 10 a.m. (JST) on the 10th of each month for the subsequent month. For example, tickets for February 1st through February 28th go on sale at 10a.m.(JST) on January 10th." Each ticket is "valid only for the specified date and time of entry", so every day is divided into entry times, and once those are taken there is no door sale to fall back on.

The calendar is also shorter than it looks. In the months shown on 25 October, the museum was closed on most Tuesdays, for two weeks from 4 to 18 November 2026, and from 27 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. A trip that falls on those dates has no chance at all.

Official options first

  1. Be online at 10:00 Japan time on the 10th. That is when the whole next month goes on sale. For a December visit, that means 10 November; for January 2027, 10 December. Japan time is 9 hours ahead of UTC, so for most of Europe the release lands in the small hours of the morning.
  2. Pick a weekday and a less obvious entry time. Every slot is sold separately, so a full Saturday morning says nothing about a Wednesday afternoon. Since there is no set exit time, a later slot still gives you the rest of the day until 18:00.
  3. Take the official bus tour. Sunrise Tours by JTB sells a bus tour that visits several places, the Ghibli Museum among them. It is the one alternative the museum itself lists for buyers outside Japan.
  4. Plan around the closures. Check the museum calendar before booking flights, since a closed day cannot be booked at all.

There is no waiting list and no sale at the museum, so do not travel to Mitaka hoping for a spare ticket.

Resale and tours: none on this page

The museum's ticket page says it plainly: "Ticket purchase for resale is not allowed." Its own list of channels for overseas visitors has only Lawson Ticket and the Sunrise Tours (JTB) bus tour. Some platforms sell walking tours or packages that say they include a museum ticket. must30 does not link them: the museum does not allow tickets bought for resale and names no channel other than these two, so this guide has no ticket offer.

If the dates you want are gone, the honest options are a different month on Lawson Ticket or the JTB tour.

Timing that helps

The museum opens from 10:00 to 18:00. At the entrance, your reservation is exchanged for the museum's own ticket, a piece of 35mm film that was used in cinemas. The current short film in the Saturn Theater, The Whale Hunt, runs until 3 November 2026, and the special exhibition on the illustrator Yuriko Yamawaki has been open since November 2025.

Getting there takes some planning. From JR Shinjuku, the JR Chuo Line reaches Mitaka in about 20 minutes. From the south exit of Mitaka Station it is a 15-minute walk, or a community bus runs to the museum every 15 minutes during opening hours, ¥230 for adults. There is no visitor parking.

What not to do

  • Do not go to the museum without a reservation. Nothing is sold there.
  • Do not buy from a reseller or a tour that bundles a ticket. The museum does not allow tickets bought for resale.
  • Do not book on a closed day. Check the calendar for Tuesdays, mid-November and the New Year break.
  • Do not miss your entry time. Tickets are valid only for the date and time shown.
  • Do not take photos or videos inside. The museum asks visitors not to, and to keep phones switched off.
  • Do not plan a picnic in the galleries. Food and drink are only allowed in or at the Straw Hat Café.
