Start with the official ticket shop

Pompeii is on Italy's list twice, as "Walk through Pompeii with time to spare" and "Explore the ruins of Pompeii". Both start with a ticket from the Parco Archeologico di Pompei. For visits from 2 March 2026 the park sells online only through Vivaticket, at pompeii.vivaticket.it, the shop its own site, pompeiisites.org, links as "Tickets". Older guides that send you to TicketOne are out of date.

This is a planning guide, not a report of a recent visit. The rules and prices below come from the park's own pages, checked on 25 October 2026. The ticket shop blocks automated visits, so the one detail taken from it (the limit on free tickets online) comes from an archived copy of the shop page dated 22 June 2026.

Why it sells out

Since 15 November 2024 Pompeii has had a daily limit of 20,000 entries and named tickets. The visitor rules approved in December 2025 split each day into two slots: 15,000 entries from 9:00 to 13:00 and 5,000 in the afternoon, from 13:01 to 15:30 in winter and to 17:30 in summer. Your ticket states your name, the day and the slot.

The park's timetables page splits the summer slots further by ticket. Of the 15,000 morning places, 12,000 are for Pompeii Express and 3,000 for Pompei+, the ticket that adds the Villa of the Mysteries and the other suburban villas. In the afternoon it is 3,000 and 2,000. So Pompei+ in the morning is the first thing to go.

To be fair about it: 20,000 is a lot, and the park never uses the words "sold out". It only recommends buying in advance "to speed up entry". It brought the limit in after a record summer, citing more than 4 million visitors and a peak of over 36,000 on one free Sunday. In must30's reading, the limit bites on summer and holiday mornings, on Pompei+ and on free Sundays, and a full day between mid October and mid March is unlikely.

Official options first

  1. Take the afternoon slot. It has its own 5,000 places, and a morning that shows nothing does not mean the afternoon is gone.
  2. Switch to Pompeii Express (€20). In summer it has four times the morning places of Pompei+ (€25). If you still want the villas, an Express holder can add the Suburban Villas route for €8 at Porta Ercolano, by card only.
  3. Buy at a ticket office. The park's only ticket offices are inside the archaeological area, at Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro and Piazza Esedra. They issue named tickets on sight of your ID, within the same daily limit. The park publishes no same-day quota, so treat this as a chance, not a plan.
  4. Use a free Sunday if your dates fit. Entry is free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month, and the next free days are Sunday 1 November and Wednesday 4 November 2026. On those days you cannot book or buy anything online: you walk straight to the turnstiles, with no named ticket, until the 20,000 are in. Arrive at opening, in must30's view.
  5. Bring the children on your booking. Under 18s are free, but the archived shop page says free tickets can only be bought online alongside at least one paid ticket, up to four per paid ticket.

Tours and resold tickets with entry included

The park's rules recognise one route in besides your own ticket: groups of five to 35 people led by accredited tour operators enter on a single group ticket in the operator's name. That makes a guided tour with entry included the option that fits the rules. It cannot beat the daily limit, but an operator that already holds places on your day can still have room when the shop shows none. Expect to pay more than the €20 ticket.

Resold individual tickets are a different matter. Every ticket is personal and non-transferable, and must carry the visitor's own name, day and slot. If the name does not match your ID you are turned away with no refund, and the park can check at any time during the visit. The shop's conditions, in a copy archived on 30 April 2026, say a ticket may not be transferred for money or be the subject of intermediation. For that reason must30 links only to guided tours here, not to resold entry tickets.

If you book through these links, must30 earns a commission at no extra cost to you.

Timing that helps

Winter hours run from 15 October to 15 March: Pompeii opens at 9:00, last entry is 15:30 and the site closes at 17:00. From 16 March to 14 October last entry moves to 17:30 and closing to 19:00. Some sites still give 1 November and 1 April as the switch dates; the park's own dates are the ones above. Pompeii closes only on 25 December and 1 January.

A Pompeii Express ticket is good for one entry, with no leaving and coming back. The park's shuttle bus to the Villa of the Mysteries stop and Boscoreale is free for visitors, subject to space on each run.

What not to do

  • Do not use a ticket issued in someone else's name. A mismatch at the gate means no entry and no refund.
  • Do not pay for a free Sunday "ticket". None exist for those days. The park says third parties have resold free tickets to visitors who did not know better, and promises zero tolerance.
  • Do not count on fixing a mistake. No change of name or date is allowed, and tickets are refunded only if the park closes.
  • Do not follow a site that still sends you to TicketOne. The park's online seller is Vivaticket.
