Float up to the Schauinsland on Germany's longest loop cable car
Schauinsland, Freiburg
Twenty minutes from the edge of Freiburg to 1,284 metres, with the Black Forest below the cabin and a panorama at the top.
What it is
The Schauinsland rises above Freiburg, and the Schauinslandbahn is Germany's longest circulating cable car: its cabins take about 20 minutes to float up to the top station at 1,284 metres, Freiburg's highest address, with a sweeping panoramic view. The cabins run continuously as needed rather than to a timetable.
How to do it
It runs all year from 9:00 to 17:00, with the last trip at 17:00 and the last chance for a return trip 30 minutes before closing. A return costs €15 and a single €12; children aged 6 to 14 pay €10 return. From central Freiburg, take tram 2 to the end of the line in Günterstal and then bus 21 to the valley station: about 20 minutes from the Bertoldsbrunnen.
Good to know
The cable car and the summit restaurant close for maintenance from 16 November to 4 December 2026, and it only runs in suitable weather.
