Visit the Church of the Holy Spirit, home of the Bibliotheca Palatina
Marktplatz
The church on the Marktplatz where the electors were buried and Europe's largest manuscript library once filled the galleries.
What it is
The Church of the Holy Spirit was first mentioned in 1239, and in 1398 the elector Ruprecht III, also King Ruprecht I of Germany, laid the foundation stone of today's church; the tower was finished after 1508. The electors were buried in the chancel, but all their tombs except Ruprecht III's were destroyed in 1693. Until 1623 the galleries held the Bibliotheca Palatina, Europe's largest collection of handwritten books, which went as war booty to Maximilian of Bavaria after Tilly took Heidelberg and was given to the Pope. From 1705 to 1936 a wall split the church in two, with Protestant services in the nave and Catholic masses in the chancel.
