Snorkel the clear water of the Kerama Islands, 40 kilometres off Naha
Kerama Islands, Tokashiki and Zamami
A national park of 36 small islands, only four inhabited, with white sand beaches and clear water a fast boat from Naha.
A full-day snorkelling tour from Naha takes you to the Kerama reefs by boat with a guide, so you skip the ferry bookings and the island timetables.
What it is
The Kerama Islands lie in the East China Sea about 40 kilometres west of Okinawa Island. Of their 36 islands only four are inhabited, among them the two largest, Tokashiki and Zamami, and the group became a national park in 2014. People come for the white sand beaches and clear blue water, good for swimming, snorkelling and diving, and from January to March for whale watching.
How to do it
From Naha, high speed boats reach Tokashiki in 40 minutes for ¥2,530 and Zamami, via Aka, in an hour for ¥3,200; car ferries take 70 minutes (¥1,690) and two hours (¥2,150). A village ferry links Zamami and Aka with Tokashiki's Aharen port; book its Tokashiki leg at least a day ahead.
Good to know
Book the high speed boat ahead in season, and pick one island per day unless you book the village ferry.
