Things to do in Hokkaido: Sapporo, Otaru and Lake Toya

Updated Leer en español

Hokkaido is Japan's northernmost main island, settled by Japan on a large scale only from the late 1800s, with snowy winters and a long Ainu history. Its capital Sapporo has its own page. This hub adds three trips from it: the port city of Otaru, the Usu volcano above Lake Toya and the Hell Valley of Noboribetsu Onsen, the island's best-known hot spring town.

Plan your trip

  • Which place for what

Sapporo for the Snow Festival, ramen and city sights. Otaru for a canal and old port warehouses half an hour away. Lake Toya for an active volcano and its craters. Noboribetsu for Hell Valley and a hot spring night.

  • How to combine them

In must30's view, base yourself in Sapporo and take Otaru as a day trip. Noboribetsu and Lake Toya share a day by tour, or two days by train and bus with a night at a hot spring inn.

  • Getting around

Trains run from Sapporo to Otaru in about half an hour and south to JR Noboribetsu Station. Buses run from JR Noboribetsu Station up to the hot spring town, and from Toya Station and Toyako Onsen to the Usuzan Ropeway.

Questions travellers ask

Is Mount Usu still active?

Yes. It has erupted four times in the past 100 years, most recently in 2000. The ropeway takes you near the summit, with views of Lake Toya and the largest crater, formed in 1977.

How far is Otaru from Sapporo?

About half an hour by train. The canal is a ten-minute walk from Otaru Station, so it is an easy half day.

Can I visit Hell Valley in winter?

Check conditions before you go: in winter some walking trails in the hills above the valley may not be passable.
