See the giant snow sculptures of the Sapporo Snow Festival
Odori Park and Susukino, Sapporo
One week each February, Odori Park fills with snow sculptures up to 25 metres wide, lit every night until 22:00.
What it is
The Sapporo Snow Festival began in 1950, when high school students built a few snow statues in Odori Park. The main Odori Site runs along the 1.5 kilometre park, with about a dozen large snow sculptures, some more than 25 metres wide and 15 metres high and over a hundred smaller ones. The Susukino Site shows about a hundred ice sculptures, and the Tsu Dome Site, outside the centre, has snow slides for families.
How to do it
The 2027 festival runs from 4 to 11 February. The Odori sculptures are lit until 22:00 and the Susukino ice sculptures until 23:00. Tsu Dome opens 10:00 to 16:00, reached from Sakaemachi Station on the Toho Line.
Good to know
For the view over the Odori Site, go up the Sapporo TV Tower at its eastern end: ¥1,200, or ¥1,700 for a day and a night visit.
