Baja California Sur is the southern half of the Baja California peninsula, a dry and thinly populated land known for remote beaches, sport fishing and the waters where whales and other marine mammals breed. La Paz, the state capital, faces the Gulf of California; Los Cabos holds the southern tip; and far up the Pacific side, the lagoons of El Vizcaíno receive the gray whales every winter.

This page helps you choose and combine. Los Cabos has its own page. Below are two trips that go further, the old sugar town of Todos Santos and the sea lions of Isla Espíritu Santo off La Paz, and from the Mexico page the gray whale lagoons.

In these Baja lagoons gray whales often come close enough to touch, while you sit still in a small boat.

Plan your trip

  • Which places for what

Los Cabos is for El Arco, resorts, nightlife and humpback whales. La Paz is a quieter city with a long malecón and boat trips to Espíritu Santo. Todos Santos is for galleries and surf. The gray whale lagoons of Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio lie far to the north.

  • Combining them

In must30's view, four days in Los Cabos and three in La Paz, with Todos Santos on the road between them. The gray whale lagoons need a separate trip north in season.

  • Getting around

Los Cabos, La Paz and Loreto have international airports. Buses link La Paz with Cabo San Lucas in about two hours, and ferries cross the Gulf of California to La Paz from Mazatlán and Topolobampo.

  • When to go

Winter is whale season: humpbacks off Cabo from January to March and gray whales in the Pacific lagoons from mid December to April. Baja is one of the driest regions in the world, so rain is rare.
