Watch the train roll through the Maeklong Railway Market
Samut Songkhram
A seafood and produce market laid on a working railway line, where awnings fold back and stalls retreat inches from a passing train.
What it is
The Maeklong Railway, opened in 1901, ends at Samut Songkhram, 72 km south-west of Bangkok, and its last stretch runs straight through one of the largest fresh seafood markets in Thailand. Locals call it Talat Rom Hup, the umbrella pulldown market. When a loudspeaker announces a train, vendors pull back their awnings and move their baskets off the rails, the train creeps through, and within minutes the market closes up again.
How to do it
Four trains a day run each way between Ban Laem and Maeklong, so the market sees eight passes. You can ride the line yourself: train from Wongwian Yai to Mahachai, a boat across the river to Tha Chalom, then the Ban Laem train to Maeklong. Buses and vans also run from Bangkok.
Good to know
Check the State Railway timetable before you set out, and arrive a little early. Keep well back from the rails when the train comes through, and do not step onto the tracks for photos.
