Raft through Tham Lod cave and watch the swifts come home
Pang Mapha, Mae Hong Son
A river runs straight through a mountain near Pai; you cross the cave by bamboo raft behind a guide with a gas lamp.
What it is
Tham Lod, near Soppong in Pang Mapha district, about halfway between Pai and Mae Hong Son, is one of northern Thailand's great caves. A stream cuts through the base of the hill, so the way through is partly poled on a bamboo raft, stepping off to climb into three big chambers of stalactites and stalagmites, and into the Coffin Cave, where prehistoric carved teak log coffins were found. At dusk, huge flocks of swifts spiral in to roost at the mouth as the bats stream out.
How to do it
The site is run by the Lum Nam Pai Wildlife Sanctuary and opens roughly 08:00 to 17:30. A guide with a lamp is compulsory, 150 baht; add about 200 baht for the sanctuary and 400 baht for a raft shared by up to three. Most visitors come on a day trip from Pai.
Good to know
Wear shoes with grip and watch your head. In the rainy season the water rises and some chambers can close.
