Start with the official ticket shop

The Acropolis is on Greece's list twice, as "Climb to the Acropolis before the heat" and "Marvel at the Parthenon atop the Acropolis". Tickets come from the Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development, the public body under the Ministry of Culture that by law has the exclusive right to issue tickets to Greece's archaeological sites. It sells them at tickets.hh.gr, which the Ministry's own Acropolis page calls its official e-ticketing service. The older hhticket.gr address no longer works.

This is a planning guide, not a report of a recent visit. Prices and rules come from hh.gr and its ticket shop, checked on 25 October 2026, and the sold-out slots described are what the shop showed that day. The Ministry of Culture's own pages would not load for us, so the facts taken from them (the shop's official status, the single-use rule and the 2023 limits) come from archived copies dated between January and October 2026.

Why it sells out

Since 4 September 2023 every visit has had a one-hour time slot, and you can only go in during yours. The Ministry set the limits then: no more than 20,000 visitors a day, with caps per hour, such as 3,000 from 8:00 to 9:00 and 2,000 from 9:00 to 10:00. The caps cover everyone, individuals and groups, online and at the ticket office, and the system cannot issue a ticket beyond a slot's limit.

In practice, what sells out is the morning. On 25 October 2026, in low season, the shop showed the 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 slots sold out for 27 and 29 October, and the 10:00 slot gone for dates as far off as 7 November. Slots from 12:00 onwards still had hundreds of places on every date checked. The "before the heat" plan on Greece's list is everyone else's plan too.

Official options first

  1. Take an afternoon slot. It is the one reliable fix. In winter the site is open until 17:00, so a slot after lunch still leaves time for a full visit, in must30's view.
  2. Book what is left, then keep looking. You can change your slot for free up to two hours before it starts, at most twice. must30's advice: secure an afternoon slot now and move it if a morning place opens up later.
  3. Check again the day before. On 25 October the shop offered far more places for the next day (more than 14,000, with 2,700 at 8:00) than for each of the following days (around 5,600). It looked as if more capacity reaches the online shop close to the date. That is an observation from one day, not an official rule.
  4. Use the ticket office. Tickets are sold at the site as well as online, from the same capped slots, so this helps only if places are left.
  5. Go on a free day. Entry is free on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September and 28 October, and on the first and third Sunday of each month from November to March. On those days tickets are issued only at the ticket offices, never online. The next ones are 28 October and 1 and 15 November 2026. Expect a queue, in must30's view.

Tours and resold tickets with entry included

The shop's terms say "the exchange, resale and, in general, the trading of tickets is prohibited", and that a ticket is valid only if it was sold by an official point of sale. Tickets found to be traded are cancelled. The same terms open a partner account to travel agencies operating legally in Greece or the EU, so they can buy tickets for their customers. That makes a guided tour from an agency, with entry included, the route that fits the rules, and it is the only kind of offer must30 links to here.

Ignore anything sold as "skip the line". The Ministry stated in 2023 that no ticket allowing holders to skip the queue has ever existed or ever will. Expect to pay more than the €30 ticket for a tour, and expect the agency to choose the slot from whatever is still available.

If you book through these links, must30 earns a commission at no extra cost to you.

Acropolis guided tours with entryTours by agencies, which can buy tickets through the official partner channel. Pick one that says entry is included, and ignore any skip-the-line promise.

Timing that helps

From 1 November to 31 March the site opens from 8:00 to 17:00. From April to the end of August it is 8:00 to 20:00, and in September and October closing moves earlier in steps, from 19:30 to 18:00. Last admission is 20 minutes before closing. The site closes on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday and 25 and 26 December.

The ticket covers the Acropolis and its slopes, once. If you leave either the Acropolis or the South Slope, you cannot go back in on the same ticket. Large luggage is not allowed, and the lift for visitors with reduced mobility has to be booked in advance.

What not to do

  • Do not buy a ticket second-hand. Full-price tickets carry no name, so the first person to present one gets in, and anyone holding a copy is turned away.
  • Do not book a reduced or free ticket without the documents to prove it. Without them you are refused entry, with no refund and no exchange.
  • Do not turn up outside your slot. Entry is allowed only within the hour you booked.
  • Do not expect your money back. Tickets are non-refundable unless the site closes for reasons beyond anyone's control.
