Start with the official flight status
The balloons are on Türkiye's list as "Hot Air Balloon Over Cappadocia", and they are not sold like a museum ticket. There is no official ticket office and no state price. Seats are sold by the licensed balloon companies, 27 of them in Cappadocia in 2025, directly or through agencies and hotels.
What is official is the decision to fly. Türkiye's civil aviation authority, SHGM, allocates take-off slots to each company, and a Slot Service Centre run by Kapadokya University checks every flight plan and the weather. Each morning it posts a flag for each of the three sectors of the flight area on a public page, shmkapadokya.kapadokya.edu.tr. In its words, "The approval for take off will not be possible in case of red and yellow flag."
This is a planning guide, not a report of a recent visit. The figures below come from the Slot Service Centre's site and from goturkiye.com, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's travel site, checked on 25 October 2026. The slot rules come from SHGM's instruction SHT-BALON-SLOT (revision 4, April 2020), read on an archived copy from 20 April 2026, because the authority's own site did not load on 25 October.
Why it sells out
Two limits stack up. The first is the slot. Companies send their flight plans to the Slot Service Centre the day before, and the centre matches them against the slots each company holds. A plan over the allocation gets no take-off approval. Slots are valid for one day only and cannot be carried over. The centre's last published total, set in 2019, was 104 slots for the sunrise flights, 52 for later "secondary" flights and 65 for the afternoon. In 2025, about 754,000 passengers flew over Cappadocia.
The second is the weather. Commercial flights stop above 10 knots of wind, and the centre's own analysis says wind is high in March and April. In 2025, flights went ahead on 223 days. That leaves roughly 140 days when nobody flew. A cancelled morning does not come back, so its passengers move to the next mornings, which were already being sold. In must30's reading, that is why a week can look full after a few windy days.
What still works
- Book for your first morning. GoTürkiye recommends planning the flight "for the first morning of your Cappadocia holiday", so that if the weather cancels it "you can reschedule for one of your remaining days". Two or three nights give you two or three chances.
- Ask for a secondary flight. Once a company has used all its sunrise slots, the rules let it fly other balloons with other pilots later in the morning, at least 30 minutes after each take-off. The Slot Service Centre says most visitors want the sunrise flight, and a smaller share of the later slots gets used. The trade-off: the wind gets closer to the 10-knot limit as the morning goes on, so these flights are cancelled more often.
- Ask about the afternoon. The rules allow flights from 14:00 to sunset, but the authority opens that period on few days, only 28 in 2019. The centre's weather study says afternoon wind is only suitable in November, December, January and part of October.
- Look at Soğanlı. It is a separate flight area coordinated by the same centre, with its own flag, and 21,587 passengers flew there in 2025. Ask the companies whether they fly there.
- Check the flag yourself. The status page shows each sector's flag, when it was updated and which hours it covers. It will not tell you about seats, but it tells you whether anyone is flying that morning.
GoTürkiye's advice is simple: "Especially in peak season, booking in advance is highly recommended." Spring and autumn are its preferred seasons.
Booking with a balloon company
Because the companies are the only sellers, any booking, direct or through a platform, ends up as a seat on a company's slot. What changes between offers is the basket size, the take-off area and, above all, what happens when the flag is red. GoTürkiye says a standard basket carries "between 14 and 20 people" and a standard flight lasts "a minimum of one hour".
must30 links the GetYourGuide page of Cappadocia balloon flights. Before paying, read the weather clause: a full refund or a free move to another morning is what you want, since the flag decides, not the company.
If you book through these links, must30 earns a commission at no extra cost to you.
Timing that helps
Morning flights run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 11:00. GoTürkiye says to start getting ready "at about 04:00 am", with hotel pick-up shortly after and a small breakfast before take-off. On the ground, the flag can stay yellow while the centre waits for the wind to settle, and it can change to green or red once the wait is over.
In summer, the centre's study says the air warms fast after sunrise, which shortens the safe window. In winter the air warms more slowly, but the study notes that the upper air is very cold. March and April are the windiest months.
What not to do
- Do not book the balloon for your last morning. If it is cancelled, there is no other day.
- Do not treat a flight in the afternoon or late morning as a sure substitute. Wind and heat rule them out on many days.
- Do not pay for a flight without reading the weather clause.
- Do not expect the company to fly under a red or yellow flag. Take-off approval is refused, whatever the booking says.
- Do not read a green flag as a promise. The final decision then rests with the pilot and the company.
