Start with the official ticket platform

Machu Picchu is on Peru's list as "Reach Machu Picchu as the mist lifts" and "Watch sunrise over Machu Picchu", and both need a ticket for a set route and hour. The site is run by Peru's Ministry of Culture through its Cusco office, whose site, machupicchu.gob.pe, sends online buyers to the state platform at tuboleto.cultura.pe. Every ticket is named and non-transferable, and the data you enter are checked at the entrance against your passport.

This is a planning guide, not a report of a recent visit. The rules below come from machupicchu.gob.pe, the ticket platform and the Ministry's 2026 capacity resolution (RM 285-2025-MC), checked on 25 October 2026. The platform's live availability needs a signed request from its own app, which must30 did not imitate, so this guide does not say which dates are sold out. Prices are left out too: must30 could not confirm the current figures for 2026 from an official page.

Why it sells out

The cap is set every year by ministerial resolution. For 2026 it is 5,600 visitors a day on 1 January, 2 to 5 April, 19 June to 2 November and 30 and 31 December, and 4,500 on every other day. Those places are not one pool. They are split by hour, from 6:00 to 15:00, and by route: since June 2024 the site has three circuits and ten routes, and each route has its own quota for each hour, part online and part for sale in person.

The tightest are the two mountains. Huayna Picchu (Waynapicchu, route 3-A) takes 200 people at 7:00 and 200 at 10:00, 400 a day in total, and Machupicchu Mountain (route 1-A) takes 175 at 7:00 and 175 at 9:00. Circuit 2, the classic route through the city, has the largest share, 140 to 160 people an hour on its main route. The platform marks a full hour "AGOTADO".

Official options first

  1. Buy in person in Machupicchu Pueblo. The Ministry sells "up to 1,000 tickets" a day at its Cusco office's ticket desk in Machupicchu Pueblo, the town below the site. They must be bought personally and in person, and they are for entry the next day. The platform has a public page that shows how many of the 1,000 are left in real time.
  2. Change the hour. Each hour has its own quota, so a day that is full at 7:00 can still have room at 13:00 or 14:00.
  3. Change the route. If Circuit 2 is gone, Circuit 1 (the "panoramic" circuit) and Circuit 3 (the "royal" one) have their own places every hour.
  4. Look at the high-season routes. On the 5,600 dates, four extra routes open: the Sun Gate (Intipunku), the Inca Bridge, the Great Cavern and Huchuypicchu, each with a small online quota.

Closures happen. In June 2026 the Ministry closed the Huayna Picchu route for the whole month, and the Great Cavern and Huchuypicchu routes for part of it, for conservation work. Check your route is open before planning around it.

Tours with entry included

Agencies can buy tickets for their clients through the same platform, in the visitors' names and from the same daily cap, so a tour cannot create places that are not there. What a tour can do is take care of the ticket, the bus and the guide in one booking. Check that the listing names the circuit and entry time, since some tours assign the circuit when you book, and that it asks for your passport details: a ticket in someone else's name will not pass the entrance check.

If you book through these links, must30 earns a commission at no extra cost to you.

Timing that helps

Your ticket gives an entry hour and a route. Stick to them: the site's rules forbid leaving the established circuits and routes, and breaking the rules means removal without a refund. Bring the physical passport whose number is on the ticket; foreign visitors must show it with the ticket at the entrance.

Travel light. Bags over 40 x 35 x 20 cm are not allowed, and neither are food, walking sticks, umbrellas, tripods, camera extensions, high heels or hard-soled shoes, or pushchairs.

What not to do

  • Do not buy a ticket in someone else's name. Tickets are personal and the data are checked.
  • Do not arrive without your physical passport. The platform asks for the passport itself, not a copy.
  • Do not plan the in-person desk for the same day. Those tickets are for entry the next day.
  • Do not assume a mountain ticket is easier off season. Huayna Picchu keeps 400 places a day all year.
  • Do not pack a big bag or a picnic. Neither is allowed inside.
  • Do not wander off your route. It can end your visit.
