Start with the official ticket shop
Pena Palace is on Portugal's list as "Climb to the fantastical Pena Palace". It is run by Parques de Sintra - Monte da Lua, a public company owned by the Portuguese state, its nature conservation and tourism bodies and Sintra town council. Since 5 March 2026 its tickets are sold at bilheteira.parquesdesintra.pt, which replaced the old single park and palace ticket with a range of visits. Prices you read on older blogs are out of date.
This is a planning guide, not a report of a recent visit. The rules and prices below come from parquesdesintra.pt and its ticket shop, checked on 25 October 2026, and the sold-out slots described are what the shop showed that day.
Why it sells out
Only the palace sells out. The park ticket has no time slot, but every palace ticket is for a date and a 30-minute slot, from 9:30 to 17:30. A sheet the operator publishes for tour operators puts the capacity at 400 people per slot. The rules are strict: you cannot go in before your slot, and "if you arrive after your reserved time, entry will not be permitted, and your ticket will not be refunded". The time is your entry to the palace, not the park gate, and the operator says to allow about 30 minutes between the two.
On 25 October 2026 the shop showed the morning going first. On Monday 26 October every slot from 9:30 to 11:30 was sold out, and 12:00, 12:30 and 15:30 were down to the last tickets. On 27 October nothing was left from 9:30 to 10:30, and the 9:30 slot was sold out every day up to 4 November. From mid-November to 23 January 2027, the last date on sale, every slot was free. Spring and summer were not on sale yet.
Official options first
- Take a later slot. Even on the tightest day, every slot from 13:00 was still open. Only the palace needs a slot, so spend the morning in the park.
- Upgrade your visit. The Full Visit (€45) adds the Private Apartments on a self-guided route limited to 20 people, and the Guided Visit (€75) is a 90-minute tour in Portuguese or English for up to 25 people, with the ride up from the park entrance included. They have their own slots, and on 25 October every one of them was free on the days the Essential mornings were gone.
- Try the ticket offices on the day. They sit at the park entrances, with ticket machines and an information point at the free Lourel car park. They draw on the same slots, so there is no guarantee.
- Look again the day before. Online buyers can move their slot until 18:00 the day before, so slots can free up, in must30's reading.
- Buy the park only. The €12 park ticket never needs a slot and covers the palace terraces and the Chalet of the Countess of Edla, which gives you the famous views of the outside without the rooms.
Combined tickets, such as Feel Sintra (€42, with the National Palace of Sintra and a 24-hour bus pass), use the same palace slots. Free entry on Sundays and public holidays is only for residents of Portugal.
Fast-track tickets from official partners
Parques de Sintra names four official fast-track partners: Blueticket, Headout, Tiqets and GetYourGuide. It reserves 25 entries in every palace slot for fast-track ticket holders. The operator does not say whether those places are still there when its own shop shows a slot sold out, but they are a separate allocation, which is why must30 links to them here. The rules are the same as for everyone: "Your ticket is only valid for the slot you booked and cannot be used in the next slot. There is no delay tolerance."
Otherwise tickets may not be resold. And since 22 October 2026, outside tour guides may not guide visitors inside the palace, so a third-party tour can include your ticket and the park, but not commentary in the rooms.
If you book through these links, must30 earns a commission at no extra cost to you.
Timing that helps
The park opens from 9:00 to 19:00, with last entry at 18:00. The palace opens from 9:30 to 18:30, with the last ticket at 17:30, and the same hours apply all year. Everything closes on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, and sometimes at short notice for storms or fire risk, as on 3 to 6 July 2026. On 1 November 2026 a trail race closes the road to Pena from 8:00 to 10:00.
Private cars may not use the roads up to Pena. Take the train from Lisbon (Rossio, Oriente or Entrecampos) to Sintra and then bus 434, or park free at Lourel, about 540 spaces, and take bus 434 or 435. Inside the park, the Pena shuttle runs from the gate to the palace every 15 minutes for €4.50 return, and it takes no cash on board.
What not to do
- Do not arrive late for your palace slot, or early. Late means no entry and no refund.
- Do not drive up. Private cars are banned on the access roads.
- Do not pay for a guided tour expecting commentary inside the palace. Outside guides are no longer allowed in.
- Do not take photos or video inside the palace. Drones and tripods are banned everywhere.
- Do not buy at the ticket office if your plans might change. Tickets bought there cannot be moved.
- Do not bring your dog. Dogs are not allowed at Pena.
