Start with the official shop

The Sainte-Chapelle, Louis IX's chapel of stained glass inside the Palais de Justice on the Île de la Cité, is not one of the activities on France's list yet; this guide is for anyone planning Paris around it. It is run by the Centre des monuments nationaux, the French state body for national monuments, whose site sainte-chapelle.fr sends every "Tickets" button to its own shop at tickets.monuments-nationaux.fr.

This is a planning guide, not a report of a recent visit. The rules and prices below come from sainte-chapelle.fr and the official shop, checked on 25 October 2026, and the sold-out days described are what the shop's calendar showed that day.

Why it sells out

Every visitor needs a ticket and a 30-minute time slot, and you have to go in within 30 minutes of your slot's start. That includes free visitors, who book a €0 ticket, and Paris Museum Pass holders and anyone with a ticket bought from a tourist office, a hotel or a tour operator, who book a free "I already have a ticket" slot. It is all one calendar. A pass gets you a price, not a way past a full day.

On 25 October 2026, in the French autumn school holidays, the shop showed every day from 25 to 31 October as "Complete", for ordinary tickets and for the "I already have a ticket" line alike. On 2 November the morning slots were already gone. Weekdays in mid-November and December still had plenty of room. The monument's own FAQ names the risk: in busy periods such as school holidays and the Easter weekend, you face a very long wait or may not get in at all.

The building adds its own bottleneck. Because the chapel sits inside the Palais de Justice, security checks are strict, with a second check before the chapel itself.

Official options first

  1. Look at nearby slots and days in the official shop. It shows the places left in each slot, and on 25 October the thin days still had odd slots free later in the day. Outside school holidays, a weekday is the easy option.
  2. Book the official guided tour. The Centre des monuments nationaux runs its own tours with their own places: a Sainte-Chapelle tour in English at 15:20 on set dates (€32, €26 for EEA visitors aged 26 and over, €6 for under 18s), and a two-and-a-half-hour tour of the Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie on some Sundays (€40). On 25 October both still had places on November and December dates, though they too were full in the holiday week.
  3. Go on a free Sunday. Entry is free on the first Sunday of January, February, March, November and December, and on those days you cannot book at all: you simply queue. The next ones are 1 November and 6 December 2026. Expect a long wait, in must30's view.
  4. Try the ticket office. There is one on site, but the monument does not say it sells entry once the online slots are full, so treat it as a gamble.

The free commented visit in French, daily at 11:00 and 15:00, still needs an entry ticket, so it is not a way in.

Tours and resold tickets with entry included

The shop's terms say individual tickets "may not be resold to a third party", and that the Centre des monuments nationaux may refuse entry to anyone holding a ticket acquired "from a third party not authorised to resell them". Authorised resale does exist: tour operators, travel agencies and online sellers can buy tickets through the monument's professional platform, and must resell them at the official price. Guided groups book their own slots on that professional calendar, up to 24 people per slot.

That is why must30 links to guided tours rather than entry-only tickets here. A resold entry ticket still needs an official slot, and on the sold-out days that line was full too. Pick a tour that says reserved entry is included, and know that the monument only handles complaints about tickets bought from its own shop.

If you book through these links, must30 earns a commission at no extra cost to you.

Timing that helps

From 1 October to 31 March the chapel opens from 9:00 to 17:00, with last access at 16:30; from 1 April to 30 September it is 9:00 to 19:00. It closes on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, and in 2026 it also closed or shut early at short notice, including during heatwaves in June and August. Arrive at your booked time, not before: security lets you through only from the time on your booking.

The combined ticket with the Conciergerie books a slot for the Sainte-Chapelle only; the Conciergerie has to be visited the same day. Restoration of the south side began in early 2025, with scaffolding inside the upper chapel; the monument says it stays open at its usual times.

What not to do

  • Do not count on a Paris Museum Pass. You still need to book a slot, and on full days there are none.
  • Do not arrive early. Security will not let you in before your booked time.
  • Do not bring a big bag, a scooter or anything sharp. There is no left luggage, and confiscated items are not returned.
  • Do not buy from a site that only looks official. The official shop is tickets.monuments-nationaux.fr.
