Start with the official ferry

The Statue of Liberty is on the United States' list as "Visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island", and every visit starts with a boat. The National Park Service names Statue City Cruises as "the ONLY NPS-authorized ferry transportation provider" to the islands, and its site, statuecitycruises.com, sells the three tickets: general admission to the grounds, Pedestal Reserve and Crown Reserve. On the spot, the park says "the only on-site location to purchase authorized tickets" is the Statue City Cruises office inside Castle Clinton, in The Battery.

This is a planning guide, not a report of a recent visit. The rules and prices below come from nps.gov and statuecitycruises.com, checked on 25 October 2026. The ferry's booking calendar runs on scripts that must30 did not test, so this guide does not say which dates are sold out.

Why it sells out

The crown sits at the top of a narrow spiral staircase inside the statue, and visits are short: 10 minutes inside. The park's FAQ says "Tickets to the crown and pedestal are limited", and Statue City Cruises says access to either "often sells out months in advance". The park adds that crown tickets "are available by reservation usually 3-4 months in advance", so the whole calendar is short and the good dates go early.

The rules also keep tickets from piling up in a few hands. There are "only four Crown tickets per household (or credit card holder)", "only one Crown reservation is allowed within a six-month period", and "Names are printed on tickets and cannot be changed or transferred". The buyer has to collect them in person, with the card used to pay, and every visitor has to show a matching photo ID and get a wristband. "Visitors without wristbands will not be permitted to enter the Crown."

Official options first

  1. Check both departure points. Statue City Cruises sells crown tickets separately for ferries from Battery Park in New York and from Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Both go to the same statue; New Jersey ferries stop at Ellis Island first.
  2. Look further ahead. With a release window of about three to four months, a date just past the end of the calendar may open soon.
  3. Check again in the last days. Buyers can cancel for a refund up to 24 hours before their visit, so in must30's view places can come back late. Remember that one crown booking per six months is all you get, so do not book a stopgap date.
  4. Take the Pedestal Reserve ticket. It costs the same, $26.30 for adults, and takes you to the top of the pedestal, by 215 steps or a lift. The park says pedestal tickets can also sell out, and that same-day pedestal reservations "MAY be available at the ticket offices, but are extremely limited". They are not sold on Liberty Island.
  5. Go with general admission. It covers the ferry, the grounds, the Statue of Liberty Museum and Ellis Island, with an audio tour included.
  6. See it from the water. The Staten Island Ferry, run by the city, is free and sails 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, from Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan across the harbor.

Tours and cruises: no crown included

Because crown tickets carry the visitors' names and must be picked up by the person whose card paid for them, a tour company cannot hand you one. Any offer that sells "crown access" on someone else's booking runs against those rules, and must30 does not link one. Statue City Cruises also warns about scammers around Battery Park: "If someone approaches you claiming tickets are unavailable, sold out, or that the ticket booths are closed, proceed directly to Castle Clinton."

What must30 does link are guided tours of the islands with the ferry, and harbor cruises that pass the statue without landing. Neither includes the crown.

If you book through these links, must30 earns a commission at no extra cost to you.

Timing that helps

The time on your ticket is when you may join the security queue, not a ferry departure or a crown entry time. Statue City Cruises asks you to arrive at least 30 minutes before, and says waits can run over an hour in peak seasons and holidays. Tickets with a time of 2:00 pm or later leave too little time for Ellis Island.

Last entry to the crown changes with the season: 3:30 pm from 1 January to 22 May, 5:00 pm from 23 May to 7 September, 4:00 pm from 8 September to mid-October and 3:30 pm again until 31 December, with 1:30 pm on Christmas Eve. Refunds are also given if the islands close for security, safety or weather.

What not to do

  • Do not buy from people on the street around Battery Park. The only authorized office there is inside Castle Clinton.
  • Do not book crown tickets for someone else to collect. The card holder has to be at the box office.
  • Do not bring a bag up. Only water in a plastic bottle, a phone, a camera and medicine go to the crown. Lockers near the monument take a quarter; there are none at the ferry screening.
  • Do not book a child under 4, or one shorter than 42 inches (107 cm). They cannot go up, and one adult is needed for every four children.
  • Do not climb without being ready for it. There is no lift between the pedestal and the crown, and Statue City Cruises asks visitors to be prepared for the heat.
  • Do not let the ticket go unused. Unused tickets are not refunded.
