Walk the World Heritage canals of the Speicherstadt and the Chilehaus
Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus district
The world's largest contiguous warehouse complex and the brick office district beside it, listed together by UNESCO in 2015.
What it is
In 2015 UNESCO added the ensemble "Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District with Chilehaus" to the World Heritage List. The Speicherstadt is the world's largest contiguous warehouse complex, a grid of narrow canals, bridges and brick warehouses; its most photographed corners are the Wasserschloss and the Fleetschlösschen. Across the road, the Chilehaus was built from 1922 to 1924 to designs by Fritz Höger in Brick Expressionism, its pointed tip jutting into the street like a ship's bow.
How to do it
The streets are free and open at all hours. The World Heritage info point in the Kesselhaus, Am Sandtorkai 30, opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00. The tourist board's two-hour guided walk costs €18 and leaves from the Jakobikirche at 15:00, Wednesday to Saturday from April to October; outside that season, a two-hour walk through the Speicherstadt and HafenCity can be booked online.
Good to know
Look inside the Chilehaus for its historic staircases.
