Meet Ötzi, the 5,300-year-old Iceman, in Bolzano
South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, Bolzano
A man found in the ice at 3,210 metres, about 45 when he died with an arrowhead in his shoulder.
What it is
On 19 September 1991 two German hikers, Erika and Helmut Simon, found a body emerging from the ice at 3,210 metres on the Tisenjoch, at the head of the Val Senales. It was first taken for a lost climber, but within days a prehistorian at Innsbruck put its age at at least 4,000 years, and later studies placed his life around 3275 to 3230 BC. Ötzi, about 45 when he died with an arrowhead in his left shoulder, has been in Bolzano since 1998, in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology at Via Museo 43, together with his clothes, his bow and his copper axe on a yew handle.
